“Gentlemen, your daughter is going to be fine.”
“Are you sure?” asked Warrick.
“Yes, she is perfectly okay.”
“But she was burning up and crying when we brought her in,” remarked Gil.
“Mr. Grissom, do you mind if I ask what young Erica wore to bed last night?”
“Well, it was kind of drafty in the house. So when I put her to sleep, I dressed her in her onesie, some sleep pants, and a t-shirt. I also wrapped her in a thick blanket, and put some socks on her feet.”
Smiling, the doctor replied, “Mr. Grissom, Mr. Brown, I believe your daughter was just a little too warm last night. That’s why she woke up crying and hot. Might I suggest that next time you simply turn up the heat a bit, place socks on her feet and a cap on her head, cover her in a thicker blanket, and let her sleep in peace.”
“Thanks, doc,” Warrick said, shaking the doctor’s hand.
“No problem, gentlemen. You can take young Erica home and put her to bed. I think all of tonight’s excitement tired the little thing out.” Casting a final glance at Gil, the doctor exited the exam room with a small wave of his hand.
Making their way down the hall, Gil pushing Erica in her stroller, Warrick kept stealing side glances at his partner.
“Don’t say a word.”
“I didn’t say a thing.”
“But you were thinking it,” Gil replied as he took Erica out of the stroller and handed her to Warrick, who buckled her into the car seat.
“Thinking what?” Warrick asked as Gil climbed into the passenger seat after putting the stroller in the trunk.
“That I am an over protective idiot. I should have listened to you when you said she was fine instead of insisting that we drag her out in the middle of the night for nothing. I’m sorry.”
“Gil, you have nothing to apologize for. We are both new to this fatherhood thing, you had every right to panic,” Warrick said as he leaned in to kiss his lover. Breaking apart, Warrick started the engine,
“Besides, I think you’re cute when you panic.”
“Besides, I think you’re cute when you panic.”
